From time to time, I’m going to be sharing with you guys about what I’m listening to, watching, buying, eating, etc. If there’s something I think is dope and deserves to be shared, I want you guys to know about it! So, check out some of my picks for this week:
What I’m Watching…
Moonlight
I’ve been singing this movie’s praises since I saw it on Wednesday. The Barry Jenkins film is exquisite in front of and behind the camera. The cinematography creates a mood that is both somber and mesmerizing. There is an intimacy to every scene that is impressive. The acting is superb throughout the film, with (unsurprisingly) beautiful performances by Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris. Relative newcomer Ashton Sanders, who plays lead character Chiron as a teenager, is arresting and magnetic. The chemistry and tension between Trevante Rhodes and André Holland is palpable, with both actors giving superb turns as the adult Chiron and Kevin, respectively.
The film is certainly a dissection of masculinity and its intersection with blackness. It forces you to confront your comfortability with the flexibility of masculinity. However, at its core, this film is really about love– the nuances of it, how it moves, how it hides, how it’s flawed and beautiful and amazing.
Do yourself a favor and go see this film!
Dr. Strange
So, I wind up seeing just about every major comic book movie because the bae is heavily into that (and I’m quietly into it too). This one was particularly special for me because my father has been telling me that Dr. Strange is his favorite comic book character since I was about five. The special effects in this film are insane. If you’re into that 3D stuff, this is probably a good movie for that. It’s well-written, the action scenes aren’t excruciatingly long like in some other comic book films, and the subject matter is really interesting. This character deals with spirituality in a way that’s so appealing; I actually took something from the film about time and purpose and the way we conceive of it. One of the more enticing Marvel Universe films.
What I’m listening to…
St. Beauty, “Borders”
Beautiful, haunting, melancholy. This song got me in my feelings. I got an opportunity to catch this duo on tour with The Internet last year at Highline Ballroom. They’re musically gifted, with Isis V on vocals and guitar and Alex Belle on vocals and tambourine.
If you watch Issa Rae’s Insecure, you might be familiar with the song as it closed out her episode (#5, “Shady as F…”) last night. The single just dropped last week, but I know Issa is a fan of theirs, so I wonder if she got the early scoop.
On my radar…
As much as I try to limit the amount of time I spend watching television, it’s so hard when there are so many awesome projects out! This one is a web series that should be coming to us in March of 2017, and I’m really excited about it. Brown Girls looks excellent because it seems real. And I’m always here for a show that’s intentional about intersectionality. Check out the show description and trailer:
A new web series by Fatimah Asghar that follows Leila, a South Asian-American writer just now owning her queerness and her best friend Patricia, a sex-positive Black-American musician who is struggling to commit to anything: job, art and relationships. While the two women come from completely different backgrounds, their friendship is ultimately what they lean on to get through the messiness of their mid-twenties.
